As part of Gen Z, I’ve been immersed in a world that thrives on quick fixes, instant gratification, and constant digital noise. I have often found myself hiding behind the screen of my phone, endlessly scrolling through content that left me feeling strangely empty and disconnected—not only from the outside world but from myself.

This journey led me to explore ancient systems of understanding the ‘self,’ which included courses in yogic philosophy, environmental ecologies and sound therapies. Along the way, I encountered the Hindu and Buddhist concept of chakras, energy vortices each with a specific role and frequency.

Upon deeper investigation, I learnt that each chakra resonates with a unique sound frequency, these vibrations offer potential as palpable tools for self-awareness and healing. Profound healing happens when these sound vibrations ripple through the body, calming the nervous system.

What struck me, though, was the lack of interest and understanding that many people have of these ancient teachings. In our fast-paced, screen-driven world, ancient concepts like chakras often seem distant or unfathomable. These concepts remain unrelatable to many, as they cannot actually ‘see’ them. This means that many people who could benefit from this wisdom tend to ignore or deny it.

As a photographer and filmmaker, I became fixated on the idea that these chakras and their sound frequencies are unseen to the naked eye. Could I visually represent that which is unseen?

Unseen Resonance is an attempt to bridge this gap, making these ancient healing practices more accessible and relevant to our modern lives.

I invite you, the viewer, to enter a visual meditation of the chakras. To be exposed to sound frequencies and have a somatic experience, a visceral experience, which can be physically felt as a therapeutic effect throughout the body. Connecting sound, water and light, you will see these elements in a dance of sacred geometry, as they are moved by the chakra’s unique sound frequencies.

Unseen resonance is a collaboration with sound healer, Ali Gunning and sound designer, Charley Phillips. On entering the space, the audience encounters a soundscape of healing instruments such as gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, and chimes, produced by Ali Gunning. Each of the instruments is played with the chakra’s essence in mind. Charley Phillips, carefully designed and adapted the sound to create a seamless visitor experience. He coded triggers for sensors that activate each of the visuals and sounds that are experienced as visitors move through the installation.

This installation is designed as a single-person experience, with only one viewer in the room at a time.  You choose your own direction to move around the room, letting your intuition guide you. The work invites you to walk, pause, take breaths and reflect.
